How to Update Firmware on Seagate Hard Drives

Keep your hard drive current with firmware updates from Seagate.
As solid as your Seagate hard drive's read and write speeds may have been when you purchased it, bugs can compromise the drive's promised abilities, and subsequent updates can even supersede some of your hard drive's original capabilities. Firmware updates address both issues, enabling you to upgrade your hard drive with bug fixes and incorporate enhancements directly into the drive's embedded software. Furthermore, update revisions can boost your hard drive's immune system by integrating its existing internal software with upgrades to its diagnostic tools and error-checking capabilities. Keep your hard drive out of the hands of Seagate's technical support by applying the
latest firmware revisions.

Step 1

Download and install a copy of SeaTools to determine your hard drive's firmware version (see Resources).

Step 2

Launch SeaTools and click its "Rescan" button to analyze your computer's hard drives.

Step 3

Click on the drive you'd like to update. Click on SeaTools' "Advanced Tests" button and then select the "Firmware Update" option from its context menu to navigate to the drivers section of SeaTools support site. SeaTools may indicate that an update is suggested for one of your drives, but the absence of a "Firmware Update Recommendation" message doesn't necessarily mean that your drives are up to date.

Step 4

Compare the reported firmware revision of the listed drives with the latest versions on Seagate's support site. Each drive is distinguished by a serial and model number. Check for Seagate's "ST" prefix for discovered drives, as other hard drives may appear in SeaTools' scan.

Step 5

Download an .exe (executable) copy of a compatible firmware package from Seagate's support site (see Resources). Store the exe. file in the SeaTools for Windows folder (e.g. Local Disk > Program Files > Seagate > SeaTools for Windows).

Step 6

Double-click on the firmware updater to launch the program. Continue on to the updater's Welcome screen.

Step 7

Compare your hard drive with the make and firmware version of the Seagate product line that appears on the Welcome screen to ensure that you've downloaded a compatible updater.

Step 8

Agree to the license. The Seagate Firmware Update Utility Start screen launches.

Step 9

Click "Proceed" on the Seagate Firmware Update Utility Start screen when you're ready to start the firmware update uninterrupted. Your computer will reboot as the update takes place, so allow the update utility to run its course. Restart your computer if a reboot isn't triggered after the update utility closes.

Warnings

  • Back up your hard drive before upgrading its firmware and ensure that there are no disruptions to the installation, such as restarts or other terminations. Close all running applications and disconnect external devices before updating your drive's firmware to avoid intrusions during the update. Improperly applied updates, including interrupted installations, can destroy data on the drive and induce faults.
