How to Install XP on an External Hard Drive

Adding Windows XP to an external hard drive is not complex.
Windows XP is the ubiquitous operating system still used by millions around the world. Although it's since been supplanted by newer versions of Windows, XP remains ideal for older machines lacking the memory or video processing needed for Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 environments. Adding Windows XP to an external hard drive for use as a backup bootable device is a smart move,
allowing you to access your machine in the event the OS on your primary drive becomes corrupted.

Step 1

Plug the drive into your computer via a free USB port. Allow a few seconds for your machine to recognize the drive. Make a note of the drive letter assigned by your computer.

Step 2

Back up the contents of the external drive to another hard drive with enough space to receive the data. The formatting process of the fresh Windows XP installation will delete any data on the external drive.

Step 3

Insert your copy of Windows XP into a free CD or DVD drive on your computer. Re-start your computer.

Step 4

Press any key to boot from the XP disc when instructed. Allow Windows XP to begin the installation process.

Step 5

Press the "Enter" key at the "Welcome to Startup" screen.

Step 6

When prompted, select the external drive where you wish to install Windows XP. This drive letter will match the one assigned by your PC to the new external hard drive.

Step 7

Follow the rest of the prompts to continue and complete the Windows XP installation to your new drive. Windows will extract from the disc to the new external drive.

Step 8

Restart your computer when prompted.

Tips

  • You can also install Windows XP on a flash drive for a quick boot in case your main drive becomes damaged.
  • Select your external hard drive as the second or third bootable drive in your machine's BIOS. To do this, tap F5 or F8 while Windows restarts. Choose "Boot Sequence" from the list, pushing the new external drive closer to the top of the list.

Warnings

  • Use caution during the installation process. Accidentally entering your primary hard drive's letter for a fresh Windows XP installation will delete any data on that drive.

Required Items

  • External hard drive with 1.6GB of free memory
  • Secondary hard drive to back up the external drive
  • Windows XP disc
